The computation of Casimir forces for inhomogeneous planar media

چکیده
Casimir forces arise from vacuum fluctuations. They are fully understood only for simple models, and are important in nanoand microtechnologies. We report our experience of computer algebra calculations towards the Casimir force for models involving inhomogeneous dielectrics. We describe a methodology that greatly increases confidence in any results obtained, and use this methodology to demonstrate that the analytic derivation of scalar Green’s tensors is at the boundary of current computer algebra technology. We further demonstrate that Lifshitz theory of electromagnetic vacuum energy can not be directly applied to calculate the Casimir stress for models of this type, and produce results that have led to alternative regularizations. Using a combination of our new computational framework and the new theory based on our results, we provide specific calculations of Casimir forces for planar dielectrics having permittivity that declines exponentially. We discuss the relative strengths and weaknesses of computer algebra systems when applied to this type of problem, and describe a combined numerical and symbolic computational framework for calculating Casimir forces for arbitrary planar models. متن کاملA Higher Order B-Splines 1-D Finite Element Analysis of Lossy Dispersive Inhomogeneous Planar Layers
In this paper we propose an accurate and fast numerical method to obtain scattering fields from lossy dispersive inhomogeneous planar layers for both TE and TM polarizations. A new method is introduced to analyze lossy Inhomogeneous Planar Layers. In this method by applying spline based Galerkin’s method of moment to scalar wave equation and imposing boundary conditions we obtain reflection and...
متن کاملDynamic Analysis of a Nano-Plate Carrying a Moving Nanoparticle Considering Eelectrostatic and Casimir Forces
This paper reports an analytical method to show the effect of electrostatic and Casimir forces on the pull-in instability and vibration of single nano-plate (SNP) carrying a moving nanoparticle. Governing equations for nonlocal forced vibration of the SNP under a moving nanoparticle considering electrostatic and Casimir forces are derived by using Hamilton’s principle for the case when two ends...
متن کاملSOME POINTS ON CASIMIR FORCES
Casimir forces of massive ferrnionic Dirac fields are calculated for parallel plates geometry in spatial space with dimension d and imposing bag model boundary conditions. It is shown that in the range of ma>>l where m is mass of fields quanta and a is the separation distance of the plates, it is equal to massive bosonic fields Casimir force for each degree of freedom. We argue this equalit...
متن کاملOn Casimir Forces for Media with Arbitrary Dielectric Properties
We derive an expression for the Casimir force between slabs with arbitrary dielectric properties characterized by their reflection coefficients. The formalism presented here is applicable to media with a local or a non-local dielectric response, an infinite or a finite width, inhomogeneous dissipative, etc. Our results reduce to the Lifshitz formula for the force between semi-infinite dielectri...
